International Downstream-Tech Philippines 2018

19 - 20 September 2018

Event Description

With a rapidly economic growth, Philippines is witnessing increasing demands in refining and petrochemical products and yet the country is still a net importer of fuels and chemicals. The country’s refined fuel consumption rose by 8% in 2016 and the high growth rate was due to substantial investment in infrastructure projects and developments–specifically the new naphtha cracker. According to Department of Energy (DOE), the liquefied natural gas (LNG) hub in Batangas is expected to start construction in 2018, taking advantage of the growing gas demand in Asia and secure gas requirements ahead of the Malampaya field depletion. It is expected to safeguard against the anticipated depletion of the Malampaya gas facility in 2024.

Chemical and petrochemical industry is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Philippines robust economic growth. The country is seeing strong infrastructure investment, primarily in water and sewer systems and hence propelling the demand for PVC in the country. The demand is majorly for PVC pipes, and other building materials and is expected to continue in the coming years as well.

Local players dominate Philippines’ downstream markets. Petron Corp is producing almost 60% of the domestically refined fuel. It is planning to increase its Bataan refinery (biggest refinery in the country) capacity, providing a short-term boost to domestic refined fuels production. In March 2017, Petron launched Blaze100 Euro 6, the cleanest and most advanced gasoline in the country, surpassing Euro6 standard. The petrochemical industry is led by JG Summit Petrochemicals Corp. It has approved investment in the three petrochemical projects with the expected investment of PHP15.8 billion driving the domestic production of chemicals, and reducing dependence on imports.
