Haldor Topsoe awarded the world’s largest coke oven gas to SNG plants in China

Topsoe has been awarded the contract for the world’s two largest plants for production of Substitute Natural Gas (SNG) from coke oven gas. The contractor is China National Gas Corporation Limited (CNGC), which is organised under the PetroChina Group.  Adding value The plants will be located in Wuhai, Inner Mongolia and will be part of a larger plant that will convert "waste" coke oven gas into clean and valuable LNG (liquified natural gas).

The inclusion of Topsøe’s process will increase the production of LNG by 90%, which will add considerable value to the project and increase utilisation of the “waste” gas.

Sustainable energy
"Wuhai project is a true green project to convert waste gaseous emissions into clean LNG-fuel," says Gao Qin, Vice General Manager of China Natural Gas Wuhai Co., Ltd. "The creative approach is profound: The success of the project will set up a model to the sustainable development of China energy industry."

"We are pleased to supply our cutting edge technology to CNGC and thereby improves resource utilization by converting waste gases into clean green LNG fuel," says Dr Nan-Yu Topsøe, Vice President, Global Strategy of Haldor Topsoe.

In Topsoe’s process, carbon dioxides are converted into SNG. The SNG is liquefied to become LNG. The plants will have a capacity of 650 million Nm3 LNG per year. The plants are planned to be in operation by the end of 2012.

The LNG will be transported by truck to distant end users and used in, for instance, fuel stations.
