Shaw receives full notice to proceed on Entergy’s Ninemile combined cycle plant
The Shaw Group Inc today announced it received full notice to proceed on a new dual fuel combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant at Entergy’s Ninemile Point Steam Electric Station near New Orleans, La. The 550-megawatt unit at Ninemile is scheduled to begin commercial operations by the first part of 2015.
“This project is a testament to Shaw’s continued execution for our clients,” said J.M. Bernhard Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer of Shaw. “For nearly 40 years, Shaw has worked with Entergy, providing engineering, procurement and construction solutions as well as fleetwide nuclear maintenance and modification services.”
“At Entergy, our employees work hard every day to find new ways provide customers with safe, clean and reliable electric power,” said Bill Mohl, president and chief executive officer of Entergy Louisiana, LLC and Entergy Gulf States Louisiana, L.L.C. “We generate electricity using a variety of fuels, including natural gas and nuclear. It’s a successful strategy that’s working for our customers, and the Ninemile plant will enhance this effort.”
In June 2011, Entergy awarded Shaw an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services contract for the construction of the new unit, and Shaw began working under a limited notice to proceed. The notice to proceed fully authorizes Shaw to begin EPC services for the plant.
As previously announced, the approximately $500 million contract was included in Shaw’s Power segment’s backlog of unfilled orders in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2011.
Shaw also supports Entergy with its nuclear power assets. Shaw subsidiaries have provided engineering or maintenance services to nuclear power plants owned or purchased by Entergy since 1973. Shaw currently is providing extended power uprate plant modifications at Entergy’s Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Port Gibson, Miss.
