Costain secures two environmental projects

Costain has secured two engineering and procurement services projects at Total’s Lindsey Oil Refinery, which will further improve the environmental performance of the refinery located at Immingham on the Humber Estuary in Lincolnshire.

The first project will allow the installation of a flare gas recovery compressor on the refinery flare system. Recovering and using the gas rather than burning it to atmosphere will reduce atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulphur oxides (SOx). It will also reduce the requirement to import natural gas as a fuel. The new installation is planned to come online in late 2014. The project will also allow further flare gas recovery systems to be accommodated in the future.

The second project is to install a Freon replacement package on one of the refinery’s cryogenic units, in line with requirements for meeting the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which comes into effect at the end of 2014.

The new refrigeration package, which will use propane as a refrigerant rather than Freon, will be designed so that it can be manufactured off site in a modular format and installed with minimal disruption to production on site. The new installation is planned to come online following the shutdown scheduled for September 2014.

Costain has used modular technology on a number of projects with great success in both the oil & gas and nuclear industries. Modularisation is highly suited for working in constrained workspaces on complex sites.

The combined contracts  will be executed by Costain’s Teeside team located in Stockton-on-Tees with support from its Manchester office.

Commenting on the project awards, Frank Millar, Costain’s Hydrocarbons & Chemicals Sector Director, said: “We are delighted to be working with Total on these projects, which demonstrate the progress made by the Company’s Teesside operation since it opened in 2009, and build on the work Costain is currently executing at Lindsey Oil Refinery from its Immingham-based Industrial Services and Civil Engineering business.”
