Haldor Topsøe licensing technology to Azerbaijan’s first ammonia-urea complex

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has decided to build the country’s first combined ammonia-urea complex 30 km north of Azerbaijan’s capital Baku. The plant is going to play a very important role for the economy of Azerbaijan in securing a reliable fertilizer production, and consequently, food supplies for the population.

SOCAR has chosen Haldor Topsøe as licensor for the ammonia process due to the company’s extensive experience within ammonia process design and technology. The ammonia plant, which is based on natural gas feedstock, will have a capacity of 1,200 MTPD of ammonia.

The urea plant is based on Stamicarbon technology and will have a capacity of 2,000 MTPD of urea. Korean Samsung Engineering is responsible for the overall construction of the complex, which begins in 2013 and is expected to be commissioned in 2016.
