SENER signs a contract with Samsung to modernise the Salamanca refinery

The engineering and technology group SENER has signed a contract with Samsung Ingeniería for the development of a ULSD (Ultra-Low-Sulfur Diesel) project to modernize the Salamanca oil refinery in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. As part of their modernization plan to produce clean fuels, the state-owned petroleum company Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) awarded Samsung the contract in September 2014.

As a result of this agreement, SENER will perform the detailed engineering for the modernization of units already in place and their integration with facilities outside battery limits.

SENER was awarded taking into account its excellent work in a previous project involving the hydrodesulfurization units at PEMEX’s Tula and Salamanca oil refineries, where it performed the basic and extended basic engineering, and for its proven internal capability as demonstrated by its Power and Process division, which has worked on other important projects from the sector such as the combined cycle plant Agua Prieta II, the TG-8 Madero oil refinery co-generation project, the CYDSA co-generation plants, the Frontera and Los Ramones compression stations, the Alpek 95 MW co-generation facilities in Cosoleacaque in Veracruz and the fluid catalytic cracking unit in the La Cangrejera petrochemical plant, also for PEMEX.

This is the first contract SENER has signed with Samsung Mexico, and it will allow the company to be a part of PEMEX’s biggest projects at present. Furthermore, it strengthens SENER’s position as a leading company for power projects in Mexico, the group’s second largest country by number of employees: in Engineering and Construction, it has a multidisciplinary team of over 400 professionals involved in major contracts in all of the sectors in which it is active. In addition to the projects already mentioned in Power and Process, in Infrastructures and Transport examples include the Toluca – Mexico City passenger train, the rail bypass of Morelia, the General Hospital of Mexico, Mexico City’s international airport, a number of works on the Durango – Mazatlán highway and intelligent transportation systems on roads across the whole country for clients such as SCT, BANOBRAS and CAPUFE. In the Marine sector, SENER also has projects related to the oil sector. Lastly, in Aerospace the company has signed a collaboration agreement with the Mexican Space Agency (AEM), and provides design and integration services for specialized machinery in the country’s growing aeronautics sector.
