Topsoe technology chosen for billion dollar fertilizer plant in Tanzania

Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation has entered into a joint venture to realize the first fertilizer plant in Tanzania with a consortium of Ferrostaal Industrial Projects GmbH, Haldor Topsoe A/S and Fauji Fertilizer Company Ltd. The fertilizer complex will be a high-capacity plant, demanding an investment of more than one billion US dollar.

“For the economic development of Tanzania, especially for the agricultural sector, we expect a huge effect from the plant. It will increase the value creation in Tanzania significantly. Now, we are looking forward to taking the project to the next level,” says Dr. James Mataragio, Managing Director of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation.

Topsoe will deliver engineering design, licensing, proprietary hardware, catalysts and additional services and Bjerne Clausen, CEO of Topsoe, is proud to be part of the joint venture: “The plant will enable Tanzania to monetize its huge gas reserves in the production of fertilizer as well as create jobs and boost agricultural productivity. We are very satisfied that Topsoe technology and services have been chosen for this extremely important project.”

Ferrostaal Industrial Projects GmbH is an international project developer and EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) service provider. Managing Director Dr. Klaus Lesker states: “This agreement marks a major step forward to boost fertilizer production in Tanzania. Combining the competence of facilitating investments with the world’s leading technologies is our key to success.”

The new plant will produce 1.3 million tons of fertilizer per year when it begins operation in 2020. Located in the southern region of Tanzania it will provide 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.
