Beneficial Reuse

A long-time advocate of recycling and sustainability, our company mantra is “Reduce, Remove, Reuse.” Fittingly, Merichem® has been a leader in beneficial reuse solutions for spent caustic and spent chemicals in refineries, chemical plants and midstream processing.

What Is Beneficial Reuse?

Beneficial Reuse is defined as using a material as a valuable commodity that would otherwise be classified as waste. When beneficially reused without reclamation, spent materials are exempt from solid-waste requirements and are categorized as a product under U.S.A. EPA regulations. Facilities can reuse byproducts or waste materials in their own operations or send them elsewhere for reuse as a fuel or substitute raw material in place of feedstock. Merichem® can help match spent caustic and spent chemicals to commercially appropriate end users in other sectors.

Cost-Effective Sustainability

Beneficial reuse of spent materials is a more environmentally friendly alternative to waste disposal. Our safe, responsible, and cost-effective approach helps our clients achieve hazardous waste minimization goals while eliminating labor intensive handling protocols such as manifesting and record keeping.

Spent materials are reused as a resource in place of other commercially available (virgin) products or feedstocks in other clients’ production processes. We contribute to a circular economy, extending the use of resources and improving HSE impact.

Materials for Beneficial Reuse Management

  • Spent Caustic (Sulfidic)
  • Spent Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)
  • Sodium Hydrosulfide (NaHS)
  • Off-spec Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
