Who is Johnson Matthey? Johnson Matthey was founded in 1817. It gained a reputation for integrity in assaying precious metals and was appointed as official assayer to the Bank of England in 1852. Now almost 200 years old, Johnson Matthey has demonstrated its ability to maintain world leadership by adapting constantly to rapidly changing customer needs.

Today, Johnson Matthey is an international speciality chemicals company. Its principal activities are still rooted in precious metals with the refining, fabrication and marketing of precious metals making up around 22% of the company’s sales. But it also manufactures autocatalysts and pollution control systems, catalysts and components for fuel cells, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), process catalysts and speciality chemicals. The group is a world leader in its core markets and has operations across the globe. It employs around 9,700 people with about 1,000 of these working in Research and Development (R&D).
