UOP adsorbent solutions in refining

A wide variety of contaminants can be effectively and economically removed from numerous hydrocarbon streams in petroleum refineries via non-regenerative and regenerative adsorbents. It is necessary to remove contaminants, including: H2S, COS, CS2, HCl, HF, Hg (elemental mercury), AsH3 (arsine), PH3 (phosphine), organic chlorides, organic fluorides, oxygenates (including H2O), NH3, other nitrogen based compounds and organic sulfur compounds in order to:
* Minimize environmental concerns and assure plant personnel’s health and safety
* Maintain trouble-free operation and protect critical process equipment
* Prevent the deactivation of in-house refinery process catalysts as well as downstream petrochemical catalysts operated by customers using refined products as feedstock
* Meet product specifications
* Maximize profits

A list of contaminants that are prone to certain process units are listed alongside the unit to help ensure the complete removal of contaminants from the process flow scheme. These adsorption units utilize both activated alumina and molecular sieve based products supplied by UOP. Key properties common to each type of adsorbent are:
* High adsorption capacity and long effective adsorbent life
* Ability to attain ultra-low contaminant effluent specification
* Low reactivity, minimization of side reactions and reduction in coke deposition
* Optimum physical properties (high crushing strength, low attrition and the ability to handle process upsets or non-ideal operating conditions)
