Refinery weighs proposals for 10 ppm diesel

This refinery wanted to make 10 ppm diesel in blocked out commercial trials as preparation for upcoming diesel specifications. Some catalyst vendors said the refinery would need to double the reactor volume to make 10ppm. Other vendors said they had a new drop-in solution, a catalyst that will do the job with no unit modifications. 
 
Instead of blocked out trials, the refiner hired C Solutions to run a 35-day, site specific pilot plant program. The objectives were to determine whether they could make 10 ppm, how much LCO could they run, and how did results differ for four different catalysts?
 
The pilot plant test was run on four competitive catalysts side by side, and showed the unit was severely hydrogen and LHSV constrained. The newest catalysts gave no benefit at all at current unit conditions because there was insufficient hydrogen pressure to realize the claimed catalyst benefits. The pilot plant test triggered a capital project to get more hydrogen supply, more LHSV, and higher pressure.
 
Meanwhile, the refiner realized a big discount on their next catalyst purchase based on the competitive test data and the realization their unit did not have the horsepower to fully utilize the most expensive catalysts.
