CB&I and CTCI select acid gas treatment unit from Frames

Frames is awarded an order from CB&I and CTCI to design and supply an acid gas treatment unit for the Liwa Plastics Industries Complex (LPIC) in the Sultanate of Oman. The unit, which is based on solid bed scavenger technology, will prevent harmful hydrogen sulfide being emitted into the atmosphere. The acid gas treatment unit is part of Frames’ small-scale sulfur recovery portfolio, which features technologies suitable for the upstream, downstream and renewable energy industries. The unit is expected to be completed and handed over in the first half of 2018.

The LPIC project involves developing a new petrochemical complex - split into four EPC Packages - for the Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic). Its primary goal is to further increase the value-added that can be derived from Omani crude oil and natural gas. It will also enable Oman to produce polyethylene for the first time. As this plastic is subject to great worldwide demand, Orpic will be able to maximize its performance in existing international markets and develop opportunities in new ones.

Flexible partner
Frames initially started by supplying solutions for the upstream oil and gas market, but the Dutch company has also proven its worth in the downstream industry and the broader energy and renewable market over the past decade. Lennard Spit, Sales Engineer at Frames, explains: “We are pleased to have secured this order from CB&I and CTCI. Together with our client, we are committed to delivering a package that exceeds our customers’ expectations and shows our know-how for the downstream market.”

Frames is particularly proud of the flexibility it is able to offer during the whole project. “Flexibility is key for this project and must be demonstrated by all involved parties in order to successfully deal with the iterative design process and interfaces. Our engineering and design process has thus been structured so adjustments can be made throughout the project, while ensuring high reliability and cost efficiency,” explains Spit.

Project management as defining factor
Effective project management plays an important role in determining flexibility and cost-awareness. It is needed to precisely coordinate a wide range of tasks and to guide professionals so the best possible results can be achieved. That is why this project will be carried out as a partnership between the Frames offices in the Middle East, India and The Netherlands.

“The whole project is complex to manage for CB&I, so our job is to make their life easier by keeping Frames’ contribution as simple as possible,” says Spit. “Our office in the Middle East will stay in control and effectively coordinate project planning, risk and change management. This will allow the project manager to serve as a predictable partner for the client and local suppliers, thus making the most of in country value and local fabrication possibilities.”
