Metso hosts ISO meeting to develop international standards in flow control

On September 25-29, Metso will host the ISO/TC 161 meeting at its Valve Technology Center in Finland's capital city area. The meeting gathers together leading stakeholders, authorities and industrial companies in the field of controls and protective devices for gas and oil to develop international standards. This year, the focus will be on the safety and reliability of burner valves.

"Metso is a specialist in process industries, and its experience is very valuable and helpful for our project for high-pressure controls. Bringing European and North American design experience and worldwide application knowledge together helps us a lot with our task. Continuous updating of standards is crucial, and digitalization, especially, is changing the ground, as it speeds up both the development of products and its standards," says Harald Petermann, managing director of Figawa.

Organizing the biennial meeting is important for the international standardization work, as it gathers stakeholders from all over the world to asses and develop the standards, and finally to reach worldwide consensus. The standards need continuous updating to comply with the requirements of the changing environment.

Type approvals and standards for valve solutions in demanding processes are becoming required more and more by local authorities. "It is vitally important to ensure that safe and reliable control solutions are offered worldwide. We are proud to host this event working towards that goal. It is beneficial to all that we together provide our insights into the best practices in the global valve industry. Metso takes active part in the standardization process right from the start. Our customers can rely on us to provide products that comply fully with the standards," says Simo Sääskilahti, senior vice president of the Valves business line at Metso.

"Metso is one of the world's leading industrial companies serving the gas and oil industries, hence the choice of location," says Bettina Rasem, junior project manager for Heating and Ventilation Technology and their Safety with the DIN Standards Committee.

ISO standards are a ground rule for many industries
International standards increase the safety, reliability and quality of products. They have been developed with globally established experts and provide a solid basis e.g. for regulations. The standards promote global trade and the safety and quality of products, and also protect the environment and the health of people, while bringing economic benefits. Metso is committed to complying with the latest ISO standards and expects its partners to do that as well.
