Groundbreaking ceremony held for Samsung Engineering’s Sarawak Methanol project

Samsung Engineering, one of the world’s leading engineering, procurement, construction and project management (EPC&PM) companies, announced today, that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for its Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd (Sarawak Petchem) methanol plant in Bintulu, Sarawak Malaysia.

Chief Minister of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Sarawak Petchem’s Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Haji Abdul Aziz Bin Dato Husain, Samsung Engineering’s President & CEO Mr. Sungan Choi and about 500 people attended, including the top management of each company, and state officials.

Samsung Engineering’s President & CEO Sungan Choi stated at the groundbreaking ceremony: "I’m pleased that we are executing this project which is so meaningful to Sarawak and Malaysia itself. Samsung Engineering will ensure that it will satisfy Sarawak Petchem through the successful implementation of this project."

The Sarawak Petchem methanol plant project is at Front-End Engineering and Designing (FEED) contract, which will be exclusively rolled over to Licensor, Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (LEPCC) contract at the end of the FEED.

The plant will be built in Bintulu, Sarawak in Malaysia and expected to produce 5,000 tons/day of methanol licensed by Air Liquide Engineering & Construction. Samsung Engineering made a strategic partnership with the world leading methanol technology licensor, Air Liquide E&C from pre-feasibility study stage, and is responsible for developing front end engineering of the project’s process and major facilities.
