STRATCO® alkylation technology

In January 2003, DuPont acquired the alkylation division of STRATCO, Inc., a leading alkylation technology licensing company servicing oil refineries throughout the world. Assets acquired include the STRATCO® brand name and technology, intellectual property, a global customer base, personnel and offices in Leawood, Kansas; Houston, Texas, and; London, England. DuPont continually looks to enhance the current technology and service offerings and to bring new synergies to the oil refining industry. The STRATCO® name and DuPont both have excellent global reputations with a goal to continue to provide the same exceptional technology and service the industry has come to expect.

Since the 1930s, DuPont has conducted research into various aspects of alkylation utilizing both bench scale and pilot scale alkylation reactors and related equipment. These reactors are configured and operated to closely simulate commercial units. DuPont was instrumental in the initial development of sulfuric acid alkylation technology in the 1930s and has specialized in alkylation technology since that time. Consequently, DuPont is the world leader in alkylation technology licensing and an expert in all aspects of the process, having vast experience in assisting refiners with alkylation design, startup, test runs, troubleshooting, optimization, revamps, expansions, operator training programs, and aftermarket product and service solutions.

Alkylation Facts
Refiners have long recognized the importance of alkylation and the special role it has in the production of premium gasoline. The alkylation process reacts light olefins (propylene, butylenes, and amylenes) with isobutane in the presence of a strong acid catalyst. The resulting alkylate product consists of branched paraffins having a low Rvp and high octane. Therefore, the alkylation process removes olefinic, high Rvp components from the gasoline pool in exchange for alkylate which makes an ideal, high octane blendstock for cleaner burning gasoline. Additionally, alkylate contains neither benzene nor aromatics and very little sulfur. Thus, the blending of alkylate into the gasoline pool helps lower the benzene, aromatics, and sulfur levels through dilution.
