Cycle life estimates for catalyst reload vary from 7 to 44 months

It is very difficult to accurately predict the cycle life for a hydroprocessing unit. This is especially true with today’s highly variable feed slates. Despite this fact, catalyst suppliers are always asked to estimate cycle life when bidding for a catalyst reload, and they comply with the request even when it is nearly impossible to make a decent estimate with the available data.
 
In one recent case, four catalyst suppliers were asked to make reload proposals, and their model estimates of cycle life varied from a low of 7 months to a high of 44 months -- that is a 6-fold range! The high variability in the estimates is not due to real differences in the catalysts; it is attributable to the unreliability of models for predicting cycle life. 
 
It is much better for refiners to base catalyst performance estimates on relative catalyst performance as measured in side-by-side independent pilot plant tests.
