Topsoe signs contract for sulphur treatment plant

Topsoe has signed a contract with the Henan Jinkai Group, China. The contract includes a sulphur management plant, which will play a key role in clean coal gasification.

From sulphurous gas to sulphuric acid
The plant will be built in connection with an ammonia plant producing 500.000 tonnes per year ammonia for fertilizer production. The waste gases from the process contain large amounts of sulphur compounds, among others H2S, and must be cleaned before released into the environment.

With Topsoe’s WSA technology, it is possible to recover the sulphur in the off-gas, converting it directly into sulphuric acid and consequently producing large amounts of superheated steam. The WSA technology has been selected as it is economically superior compared to traditional Claus technology.

“We are very pleased that the Henan Jinkai Group has selected Topsoe for this contract. We have extensive experience with our WSA technology, which combines an environmental aspect with economic efficiency. We look very much forward to the cooperation,” says Helge Hersbøll, Sales Manager, Environmental Department, Technology Division.

Sulphuric acid production
The plant will recover 40 MTPD of sulphur from sulphur containing acid gas, and it will produce 120 MTPD of sulphuric acid as well as 245 MTPD of superheated steam.

The plant is located in Kaifeng City in the Henan Province of People’s Republic of China.

The contract includes license, basic engineering, equipment, materials, catalysts, supervision and training.
