Grace earns awards for energy efficiency and facility safety

W. R. Grace & Co. has received 2011 Responsible Care(R)  Energy Efficiency Awards and Facility Safety Awards from the  American Chemistry Council (ACC) for implementing energy efficiency  improvements and achieving certain safety milestones.

The ACC awards are bestowed upon companies with broad programs to  achieve energy efficiency improvements, including the creation of energy  teams, communications, goal setting, recognition and management support.  Individual ACC member companies nominate specific projects for  recognition; winners are selected by members of the judging committee.

Two Grace manufacturing facilities, in Lake Charles, Louisiana and  Baltimore (Curtis Bay), Maryland, received this year's Energy Efficiency  Awards. Employees optimized equipment to recycle hot water, reduce  overall temperatures and decrease airflow in certain manufacturing  processes. These changes reduce the company's annualized emissions of  carbon dioxide by 6,728 short tons.

A total of nine Grace sites received Facility Safety Awards, including  Certificates of Achievement (presented to facilities in Edison, New  Jersey and the Chicago 65th Street plant in Illinois) and  Certificates of Excellence (presented to facilities in Chattanooga,  Tennessee; the Chicago plants at 51st and 71st  Streets in Illinois; Lake Charles, Louisiana; Houston, Texas; Irondale,  Alabama; and East Chicago, Indiana). The Certificate of Achievement  distinguishes facilities that operated without fatalities or days away  from work in 2010. The Certificate of Excellence recognizes sites that  worked without fatalities, days away from work, safety-related job  transfers or restricted work among both employees and contractors in  2010.

"At Grace we make it a priority to lead with safety," said William  Corcoran, Vice President of Public and Regulatory Affairs. "Knowing our  efforts make a difference and having so many of our facilities be  recognized for their safety performance is really rewarding."

Award winners were announced and recognized during the opening ceremony  of the 2011 Responsible Care(R) Conference and Expo in Miami,  Florida on April 17.

Grace received the Responsible Care(R) Energy Efficiency Award  from the American Chemistry Council in prior years. In 2009, Grace was  recognized for its operations in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Lake Charles  and Baltimore. In 2010, Grace was recognized for its productivity  efforts in reducing natural gas and electricity usage at its  manufacturing operations in Lake Charles and Baltimore. That same year,  Grace was also recognized with safety awards for the facilities in Lake  Charles, Baltimore and 51st Street-Chicago.

About the American Chemistry Council
Founded in 1872, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) represents leading  chemical companies that have committed to implement goals and guidelines  that go beyond federal regulations on health, safety, security and the  environment. Since 1988, ACC's Responsible Care(R) initiative  has led to the reduction of releases to the environment by more than 71%  and a safety record that is more than four times safer than the average  of the U.S. manufacturing sector.
