Topsøe awarded the third coke oven gas to SNG plant in China

CNOOC (China National Oil and Off-shore Corporation) has awarded Topsoe a contract for converting coke oven gas with extra CO2 into SNG/LNG. At the end of 2011 Topsoe was awarded the supply of license, engineering and catalyst for converting coke oven gas into SNG (Substitute Natural Gas). CO2 will be added to the coke oven gas from an external source. This allows for the use of the valuable compounds in the coke oven gas and reduction of CO2-emissions.

The contractor is CNOOC Gas & Power Group, which is subsidiary under the CNOOC Group. The SNG will be transformed into LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) using CNOOC’s own technology platform.

Adding value
The plant will be located in Heze, Shandong. The feed gas is "waste" coke oven gas from a local coking plant and CO2 from a fertilizer plant. The product SNG will be converted into LNG and distributed to the local market as valuable fuel.

Topsoe will use its TREMP™ technology for the methanation section. Topsoe’s TREMP™ process has now been chosen for six large SNG plants in China and Korea. "We are pleased that an important organisation like CNOOC chooses Topsoe technology to provide low emission fuels, based on waste gases, to the Chinese market," says Per Bakkerud, managing director, Haldor Topsoe China.

The plant is planned to be in operation by the end of 2012.
