HPCL selects IsoTherming® hydroprocessing technology from DuPont Sustainable Solutions for Mumbai refinery

DuPont Sustainable Solutions is pleased to announce that Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has selected IsoTherming® hydroprocessing technology for its ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) expansion project at the Mumbai, India, refinery. Development of the technology package was initiated in July 2011, and the project is expected to start up by March 2013.

“HPCL has always supported new and innovative technologies to improve profitability,” said Mr. K. Murali, HPCL director of refineries. “With IsoTherming® technology, we would be able to achieve higher diesel production with better quality at a lower cost. We are pleased that we are the first company in India to adopt this technology.”

IsoTherming® hydroprocessing technology is licensed and marketed by DuPont Sustainable Solutions’ Clean Technologies office in Leawood, Kansas. Currently there are six commercial IsoTherming® operations in both hydrotreating and mild hydrocracking applications; 12 new units have been licensed globally. IsoTherming® capacities range from 2,500 bpd up to 80,000 bpd. Feedstocks include 100 percent kerosene, 100 percent light cycle oil and various mixtures of distillates and heavy gas oils, including coker blends.

Today’s petroleum refiners are required to produce low-sulfur products while also reducing the sulfur-based emissions they generate in the process. Typical hydroprocessing techniques use hydrogen in contact with a solid catalyst to remove sulfur and other contaminants from petroleum liquids. IsoTherming® hydroprocessing technology employs a novel reactor system that is superior to conventional hydroprocessing technologies. By using the hydrogen and catalyst more efficiently, IsoTherming® technology offers the refiner lower capital and annual operating costs while significantly reducing sulfur content in motor fuels.
