Chevron Phillips Chemical studying NAO expansion at Cedar Bayou Plant
Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP announced it is studying the possibility of expanding its normal alpha olefins (NAO) capacity – targeting at least a 20-percent increase in a phased approach – at its Cedar Bayou Chemical Complex in Baytown, Texas, and the company has filed the necessary environmental permit application with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Construction would be targeted to commence in the first quarter of 2014, and the project would be completed in the fourth quarter of 2015. Final approval would be sought in the third quarter of 2013.
“This study echoes Chevron Phillips Chemical’s strong commitment to the NAO business and to meeting the growing demand of our customers,” said Mitch Eichelberger, general manager of normal alpha olefins and polyalphaolefins for Chevron Phillips Chemical. “In addition, this proposed expansion has great synergy with the 1-hexene plant currently being built at our Cedar Bayou complex.”
Earlier in 2012, Chevron Phillips Chemical began construction of the world’s largest on-purpose 1-hexene plant capable of producing up to 250,000 metric tons (551,000,000 lbs) per year at its Cedar Bayou complex. This project is anticipated to start up during the first half of 2014 and utilizes Chevron Phillips Chemical’s proprietary, 2nd generation, on-purpose 1-hexene technology to produce comonomer grade 1-hexene with exceptional product purity from ethylene.
