Neste Oil begins preparations for modernizing energy generation at Porvoo

Neste Oil is preparing to modernize its energy generation capabilities at the Porvoo refinery over the next 10 years. Some of the existing generating facilities at the site are approaching the end of their planned service life and Neste Oil has initiated a planning process aimed at replacing them with new units that will comply with future emission and energy efficiency requirements.

The options being studied include continuing the use of natural gas and refinery sidestreams, as well as increasing the use of biofuels. Detailed engineering for the revamp will start later, and Neste Oil expects to take the first investment decisions needed in 2014 at the earliest. The new units will probably be commissioned on a phased basis and are expected to be fully operational by the end of 2023.

The total output of the refinery's power plant currently stands at approx. 900 MW, of which 480 MW of capacity is scheduled for replacement. The plant supplies energy to both Neste Oil's refinery and other companies based in the Kilpilahti industrial area.
