Hyundai Engineering implements Intergraph Smart™ 3D
Leading Korean engineering company Hyundai Engineering Co., Ltd (Hyundai Engineering) has achieved cost savings of more than 20 percent in engineering rework man-hours on a multi-billion dollar petrochemical plant project with the Intelligent Design Basis Verification (IDBV) solution, a new customization for Intergraph Smart™ 3D that automates the process of verifying and confirming engineering design work.
Smart 3D is the world’s first and only next-generation 3D design solution specifically tailored for plant, offshore, shipbuilding and the metals and mining industries, employing a breakthrough engineering approach that leverages real-time concurrent design, rules, relationships and automation. Hyundai Engineering, a longtime Intergraph® client, adopted Smart 3D for a project in Korea in 2008 and experienced an immediate boost in its productivity and efficiency.
Intergraph Process, Power & Marine (PP&M) and Hyundai Engineering started collaborating on the development of Intelligent Design Basis Verification in early 2014. As one of Korea’s leading and most competitive engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies, Hyundai Engineering sought a solution to verify the quality of design work performed by junior engineers and sub-contractors on its projects.
The Smart 3D Intelligent Design Basis Verification solution was launched in November 2015 and implemented on a current Hyundai Engineering project, a US$2 billion petrochemical plant for Turkmengas, Turkmenistan’s national oil and gas company. IDBV immediately helped Hyundai Engineering optimize the verification process by automatically eliminating design errors detected at an early stage, resulting in improved efficiency and cost savings of greater than 20 percent.
Hyundai Engineering plans to use IDBV on all of its current and future Smart 3D projects.
“Approximately 40 rules were developed and implemented for the first time in November 2015 on one of our projects, a $2 billion petrochemical plant in Turkmenistan. It reduced work hours and costs while improving productivity. Considering Intelligent Design Basis Verification prevents construction re-work of a project, it achieved about 20 percent or more in cost savings on the project,” said Myung-su, Han, CIO of Hyundai Engineering.
Gerhard Sallinger, Intergraph Process, Power & Marine president, said, “Hyundai Engineering is one of the leading global EPCs and has used Intergraph solutions on projects of all size for more than 20 years. We are very pleased to see the success of the first implementation of Intelligent Design Basis Verification and with their decision to utilize the solution on all projects using Smart 3D.”
