Fluor petrochemicals project recognized as global best by engineering news-record

Fluor Corporation announced today that Engineering News-Record magazine has recognized DowDuPont Materials Science’s new ethylene production facility in Freeport, Texas, with an Award of Merit in the 2017 Global Best Project Awards. The project was honored in the Power/Industrial category.

DowDuPont Materials Science is the business division of DowDuPont, to be named Dow.

“Dow and Fluor had a world-class team that focused on execution predictability and best practices, aligning all stakeholders at the start of the project,” said Mark Fields, president of Fluor’s Energy & Chemicals business in the Americas. “The Fluor and Dow project team provided numerous solutions to project challenges and delivered a safe, quality, on-schedule facility. We are honored to have their achievements recognized as among the best in the industry.”

“Dow and Fluor leveraged lessons learned from previous joint projects and truly worked as one team to keep our first-mover advantage intact,” said Ron Huijsmans, Dow’s U.S. Gulf Coast program director. “From overcoming flooding at a Louisiana facility that was used to fabricate pipe for the project to innovative use of tower cranes and the modular concept for the pipe racks to improve safety and efficiency, this team found solutions to challenges all along the way, enabling us to complete the facility safely and on schedule.”

Fluor provided engineering, procurement and construction services for the 1.5-million-ton-per-year light-hydrocarbon cracker, which can use both ethane and propane as feedstock. Using a modular design approach to optimize on-site craft resources, the team also challenged industry norms to improve the design’s constructability in the field. The 3,000-plus craft workers achieved industry-leading quality and productivity levels to complete mechanical construction safely and on schedule in March 2017.

Industry veterans evaluated the Global Best Projects nominations on  safety performance, innovations, challenges and design and construction  quality, with a special emphasis on the diversity of global project  teams and their collaboration.

In addition to the project being featured in the October 16 issue of ENR,  the project team was recognized at an awards gala on Mon., October 23 in  New York City.
