Sinopec selects Callidus® Advanced Flare System from Honeywell UOP
Honeywell UOP announced today that its Callidus® Advanced Flare System has enabled Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company Limited (SPC) to revamp an ethylene plant, increasing its smokeless capacity and providing safer and more efficient waste gas treatment, to meet China’s increasingly stringent environmental regulations.
This is the first adoption in China of the Callidus flare system, which features a smokeless elevated flare tip. After technical modifications, the SPC plant’s smokeless capacity has increased from 125 tons per hour to 250 tons per hour, and smoke control has improved by 100 percent with only a 20-percent increase in steam consumption. Honeywell UOP also has provided project design, performance testing, technical support, and related services for SPC.
SPC is committed to becoming one of the world’s leading refining enterprises, and an advanced flare is essential for achieving this goal. It selected Honeywell UOP technologies because they meet SPC’s criteria for performance and environmental compliance.
According to the volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions prevention and control working plan issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China in 2017, VOC emissions by refining and petrochemical industries should be reduced by more than 10 percent by 2020.
The SPC flare system began operation in 1989. Since that time, the ethylene facility’s capacity has been expanded by 400,000 tons, with an addition of a new 300,000-ton plant that left its smoke control capacity lower than emissions requirements. Honeywell UOP technologies provided an effective solution for upgrading the limited steam supply and pressure, while preserving the existing pipe system. The new flare was started in July.
“Honeywell UOP is known for extensive project experience and a large number of successful case studies,” said Henry Liu, Vice President and General Manager of Honeywell UOP China. “Our technologies bring huge economic benefits to customers such as SPC, and help them meet increasingly stringent Chinese environmental laws and regulations, and achieve sustainable development.”
The Callidus Advanced Flare System provides economical flaring with high destruction efficiency, high smokeless capacity, low noise and low radiation for a broad range of flare applications. It also can improve combustion performance and significantly reduce flare VOC emissions. In 2017, Honeywell opened the first center in China for testing flare emissions, to aid customers working to reduce emissions of VOCs in industrial flare systems and improve flare operation.
A subsidiary of Sinopec, SPC is one of the largest refining-chemical integrated petrochemical companies in China. Sinopec is world’s largest oil refining company and the second largest chemical company. In 2018, Sinopec ranked No. 3 on the Fortune Global 500 list.
