Samsung Engineering wins MENA’s project of the year award

Samsung Engineering, one of the world’s leading engineering, procurement, construction and project management (EPC&PM) companies announced today, that it was honored as Oil & Gas and Mega Project of the Year, at the 2022 MEED Projects Awards, in association with Mashreq. Recognized for providing quality, innovation such as in digital technology, sustainability, social impact and engineering excellence across the MENA with success. Samsung Engineering received honors as MENA Winner and Saudi Arabia’s National Winner for its SABIC United EO-EG-III Project and also as Kuwait’s double National Winner for its KNPC Clean Fuels Project (CFP) — Mina Abdulla EPC Package 1.

Hosted by MEED, at the Gala Awards ceremony at La Brise, The Ritz-Carlton, Jumeirah Beach Residences in Dubai, Samsung Engineering’s Hyochan Kim, Project Manager, Taewook Jeong, Project Manager, Alex (Seunghyeun) Oh, Team Head of Project & Construction Management and Jaehong In Team Head of Business Development & Marketing of Samsung Engineering UAE, Petrofac’s Prashant Bokil, Vice President & JV Project Director, Roberto Bertocco, Chief Commercial Officer and McDermott’s Imre Csoti Vice President Onshore Operations celebrated the great achievements of the project at the awards function.

The SABIC United EO-EG-III Project is the word largest EO/EG plant (MEG 0.7mil. ton/year). Samsung Engineering applied various innovative ideas to improve the project performance. The SABIC United EO-EG-III Project started beginning of 2018 and reached completion 2022. It was executed in the Jubail Industrial City located in the east of Saudi Arabia, 100 km north of Dammam. It is the 20th EO/EG project executed by Samsung Engineering, which is designed to reflect all of our experiences and the latest innovation ideas. It was intended to provide the best and differentiated EO/EG plant to the client as an optimal and systemized technical service. With Samsung Engineering's successful project implementation, SABIC has now the world's largest EO/EG plant through their affiliate company Jubail United Petrochemical Company UNITED), thereby laying the solid fundamental for sustaining its dominance in the global EO/EG market.

Reflecting the EPC experiences of lots of previous EO/EG projects, Samsung Engineering operated the organization for a flawless start-up, as well as constructability from the early stage. Moreover, it conducted the study with the client from the beginning to minimize GHG emissions, and create sustainable energy and utilities, and as a result, this plant was built as the first EO/EG plant based on zero steam supplied concept (environment-friendly) to give a safe and clean environment to the next generation.

KNPC CFP — Mina Abdulla EPC Package 1 expanded and upgraded the Mina Abdullah (MAB) refinery to a capacity of 454,000 BPSD and Mina Al-Ahmadi (MAA) refinery to 346,000 BPSD to an integrated refining complex with a total capacity of 800,000 BPSD, in order to meet market demand and specifications for local & international markets. Further, enhanced the environmental and safety performance of KNPC refineries and completed major upgrades of KNPC refineries so they can convert high Sulphur fuel oil to higher value products.

Samsung Engineering as part of PSCJV, took it as task to provide to KNPC and Kuwait with the best possible social benefits possible, by fulfilling local needs such as investing into the community/region and creating jobs at KNPC CFP site. Moreover, PSCJV covered the region and additionally internationally, the demand for clean fuel, in compliance with global social benefits to bring a clean fuel projects for Kuwait, to cut air pollutants and therefore a sustainable plant for KNPC and Kuwait’s future and the whole MENA region.

As the only Korean EPC contractor receiving honors from MEED for the 11th consecutive year, Samsung Engineering is celebrating after being named a MENA and National winner in the Oil & Gas project of the Year and National winner in Mega Project of the Year category. The panel of judges and the respected experts in the oil & gas industry have chosen Samsung Engineering as the MENA project for Oil & Gas and also honored Samsung through PSCJV as ‘Kuwait’s National Winner’ for Mega and Oil & Gas projects for its excellent project management ability in terms of quality, innovation such as in digital technology, sustainability, social impact and engineering.
