Playing a key role in Europe’s first large-scale blue ammonia plant
Wood has entered into a framework agreement with Horisont Energi, an independent Norwegian clean energy company that provides clean energy and carbon storage services.
Committed to driving the energy transition, Horisont Energi transforms gas into cost-leading clean ammonia and hydrogen, and offers CO2 transportation and storage solutions using proprietary technology, paving the way for a low-carbon economy. The company recently announced a cooperation agreement with Equinor and VÃ¥r Energi on the joint development of the Barents Blue project, Europe’s first large-scale production facility for blue ammonia.
Wood will play an important role in advising on the project, providing specialist engineering and management consultancy services covering both offshore and onshore areas as Horisont Energi continue to mature projects within clean ammonia and hydrogen.
Andy Hemingway, President of Energy, Optimisation and Innovation at Wood, said: “Wood is focused on accelerating the global energy transition. Ammonia is one of the world’s most widely used industrial gases, and we’re pleased to be supporting Horisont Energi’s ambitious plans to decarbonise this vital product.”
Bjørgulf Haukelidsæter Eidesen, CEO of Horisont Energi, said: “I’m excited to announce this agreement. As Horisont Energi and our partners aim to build Europe’s first world-scale clean ammonia project with offshore CO2 storage, it is essential to establish long-term relationships with the strongest partners in the industry. Wood has unrivalled experience from complex energy-related projects worldwide.”
Barents Blue is Horisont Energi’s first project. Located in Finnmark in Northern Norway and based on natural gas from the Barents Sea. The project includes a clean ammonia plant and storage of the CO2 from the production process below the seabed.
