Article Summary
Until recently, having a solution that checks all these boxes was hard to come by. Fortunately, Wasson-ECE Instrumentation and VUV Analytics, Inc. have come up with a solution!
The cumulative effort and collaboration between Wasson-ECE and VUV Analytics has resulted in the Eclipse E-VUV, the first ever process gas chromatograph (PGC) capable of delivering laboratory-quality chromatography with vacuum ultraviolet detection technology. What does this mean for you? This means you can now bring laboratory-caliber performance into your process environment!
Traditional PGCs are unable to meet performance standards because they can’t control temperatures and pressures as precisely as lab GCs can. Consequently, most PGCs rely on packed columns and isothermal ovens for their chromatography. Eclipse PGCs were specifically designed to perform lab-quality capillary chromatography in hazardous or general-purpose process environments. Wasson-ECE engineers spent years designing and optimizing the patented, micro-convection ovens which provide temperature-programmable environments for capillary columns. Electronic pressure, mass and flow controllers precisely control the ovens, detectors and flow conditions of the analyzer as well. Together, these design features have enabled Eclipse to become the most flexible and analytically capable process analyzers available to the HPI and CPI markets.
But, that’s just half the story. The Eclipse E-VUV is also equipped with the VGA™-100, the world’s first benchtop detector capable of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) detection, from VUV Analytics. All gas phase molecules absorb strongly in the vacuum ultraviolet region (125 — 240 nm). This strong absorption provides compound-specific spectra which delivers both quantitative and qualitative data.
By combining capillary chromatography with the VGA-100 detector, analysis with the Eclipse E-VUV is free from the challenges that competing technologies face due to multiple traps and columns and excessive run lengths. Because VUV spectra are compound-specific, even coeluting compounds can be easily deconvoluted and identified. Unlike Reformulyzer® and DHA approaches, E-VUV can also speciate hydrocarbons out to C20. Custom configurations also allow for a wide variety of additional uses such as speciation of oxygenates.
The same technology used inside the Eclipse E-VUV is also available in a laboratory-ready form factor. Combining the VGA-100 with VUVision™ Software and VUV Analyze™ Software gives rise the VUV Analyzer™ Platform. The platform has been established as the new industry standard for fuels analysis because of its ability to analyze data in a fast, easy and highly accurate manner and is capable of analysis of finished gasoline (ASTM D8071), jet fuel (ASTM D8267), and other hydrocarbon streams, with no changes in hardware or setup.
Stop waiting for results to come back from the lab! Don’t settle for packed columns or isothermal ovens. Most importantly, don’t be left in the dark. Contact Wasson ECE or VUV Analytics to find out how you can see more with the Eclipse E-VUV.
