CANSOLV CO2 capture system to play a key role in Net Zero Teesside Power
Shell Catalysts & Technologies is pleased to announce that the CANSOLV CO2 Capture System will play a key role in Net Zero Teesside Power, after the landmark UK project took its final investment decision and prepares for construction.
The project marks the third CANSOLV CO₂ deployment in the past 12 months to achieve FID, reflecting the growing momentum for carbon capture initiatives worldwide. The NZT Power project is designed to generate up to 742 megawatts of low-carbon, flexible power, and aims to be one of the first commercial-scale gas-fired power stations globally to integrate carbon capture technology. Shell’s proprietary CANSOLV CO₂ technology, which features Shell Catalysts & Technologies’ advanced amine solution, can enable the capture of up to 2 million tonnes of CO₂ annually from the plant’s combined-cycle gas turbine. The captured CO₂ will then be transported and permanently stored below the North Sea by the Northern Endurance Partnership.
Shell Catalysts & Technologies, in partnership with Technip Energies, GE Vernova and Balfour Beatty as part of a Technip Energies-led consortium, was selected to deliver this transformative project in 2024 after a rigorous three-year selection process.
Located in Teesside, UK, within the East Coast Cluster – one of the first two carbon capture, usage and storage clusters to be taken forward by the UK government – this facility benefits from Track 1 status under the UK government’s cluster sequencing initiative.
As one of the few projects of its kind globally, this facility underscores the UK’s commitment to achieving its ambitious decarbonisation targets, supporting the government’s 2050 net-zero goals and its mission to move to clean power by 2030.
Nick Flinn, Director of Shell Catalysts & Technologies, said: “Being selected as the carbon capture technology provider for Net Zero Teesside Power reflects the proven capabilities of Shell’s CANSOLV CO₂ technology in delivering substantial, reliable emissions reductions at scale. As the third CANSOLV CO₂ deployment to reach FID in the past 12 months, this project highlights the growing momentum for carbon capture solutions globally. With the potential to capture up to 2 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, it marks a significant step toward achieving the UK’s net-zero ambitions.”
Christophe Malaurie, Senior Vice President of Decarbonisation at Technip Energies, added: “We are proud to partner with Shell Catalysts & Technologies to deliver this pioneering project, which sets a new standard for integrating carbon capture with gas-fired power generation. We believe that Shell’s CANSOLV CO₂ technology is a solution of choice address the unique challenges of dispatchable power decarbonisation, supporting a cost-effective and sustainable pathway for the UK’s energy transition.
